Since 1991, we have temporarily detached works under the title “In Focus” from the Hamburger Kunsthalle from their context within the art collection and placed them in their own art-historical context, in order to make them more understandable or to make them visible at all under new aspects. The fact that we are now devoting ourselves to a painting by Max Ernst, the Figure humaine, has a special, indeed a moving reason: the painting was handed to us as a gift. In the best Hamburg tradition - our local museums are, after all, not of baronial but of civic origin - a collector who has been closely associated with us for a long time and who values modest seclusion decidedly more highly than public appearance (which is why he doesn’t wish to be named) has left this important artwork to us and thus substantially enriched our small Surrealist department.
