Artists see Hamburg
23.05.2014 - 14.09.2014 | | Special exhibition | Exhibition catalogue

2014 marks the 100th anniversary of the death of the first director of the Hamburger Kunsthalle, Alfred Lichtwark (1852 - 1914). One of Alfred Lichtwark's most far-sighted ideas was to invite artists to Hamburg to have landscapes and portraits made on site and then add them to the Kunsthalle's collection.

Lichtwark, who had been director since 1886, had recognised early on that the city of Hamburg could be of great interest to young, modern artists of his time as a motif for their paintings. As he wanted to convey contemporary art to the art public in Hamburg, he founded the collection of pictures from Hamburg as early as 1889 and initially commissioned younger painters from Hamburg and later artists from all over Germany and abroad. Lichtwark commissioned works from the Hamburg artists Ernst Eitner and Arthur Illies, from leading German artists such as Max Liebermann, Lovis Corinth and Max Slevogt and also from artists from France, such as the Post-Impressionists Pierre Bonnard and Edouard Vuillard. Édouard Vuillard and Pierre Bonnard spent a few weeks in Hamburg in 1913. The paintings created during this time, such as Bonnard's Evening at the Uhlenhorster Fährhaus (1913) and Vuillard's View of the Inner Alster (1913), are among the most important works in the Hamburger Kunsthalle today.

‘Lichtwark revisited’ takes up this idea of Lichtwark: The Kunsthalle is inviting six renowned artists to create works that deal with Hamburg. The newly created works will continue the history of the collection of images from Hamburg. Some of the artists were already familiar with Hamburg, while the project brought others to the city for the first time. 100 years after Alfred Lichtwark, who concentrated primarily on painting in his commissioned works, the artistic means of expression now include media such as photography, film, installation and graphics.

The new works are presented in dialogue with the works commissioned by Alfred Lichtwark. The question of how the view of Hamburg has changed and how artists perceive the city today is of interest.
