ART – WHAT´S THAT? To honour of Werner Hofmann | 2014
text volume | 96 pages | 25 illustrations | softcover | german edition
In the obituary of his predecessor in the function of director of the Hamburger Kunsthalle, Carl Georg Heise, Werner Hofmann lamented the rampant loss of angles and attitude: "Heise was a confessor. This type doesn’t fit into our 'media landscape'; it is becoming extinct." Hofmann wrote this in 1979 and added: "What should not die out is the courage to irritate, to be uncomfortably clear." Throughout his life, Hofmann himself, as director of the Hamburger Kunsthalle and in the decades since, has ensured that this courage doesn’t become extinct with his unbending stance and clear formulations.
