Description:

SCULPTURE FOR HAMBURG. Alfred Lichtwark's Foundation of a Sculpture Collection in the Hamburger Kunsthalle | 2021
collection catalogue | 80 pages | 41 illustrations | softcover | german edition

High-quality, international, contemporary: this is how the first director of the HAMBURGER KUNSTHALLE, Alfred Lichtwark, characterised the sculptures he wanted to unite in the museum and the city space. In 1891, he was able to establish the collection in the Kunsthalle. His initiative was a pioneering achievement. Other museums followed and soon surpassed what had been achieved in Hamburg. For although remarkable things were built here, only a fragment of what Lichtwark had designed with commitment and expertise was realised. This book tells the story of his sculpture collection for Hamburg against the background of sculpture around 1900 and illuminates Lichtwark's unattained ideal.

Published by the HAMBURGER KUNSTHALLE, printed on behalf of the Freunde der Kunsthalle e. V.
