Description:
ERNST WILHELM NAY | RETROSPECTIVE
25 March 2021 - 07 Aug 2022 | special exhibition | exhibition catalog | German edition

The powerful, intensely colored paintings of Ernst Wilhelm Nay (1902-1968) are considered a bridge between art before and after World War II, between Expressionism, abstraction, and a free gestural painting after 1945, between German and international modernism. With around 120 paintings, watercolors and drawings, this first retrospective after 20 years presents all stages of a multi-faceted oeuvre. It also illuminates central themes, motifs, or concepts that have shaped Nay's thinking over the decades, thus enabling a view of his work as an organic whole. In doing so, it connects Nay's work with his time and with political, social, scientific, and philosophical issues that found expression in his work.
