1923 Faces of an Age. Ed. by Juliane Au. With contributions by Juliane Au, Gabriele Himmelmann, Florian Ludwig, Karin Schick, Jan Steinke and Andreas Stolzenburg as well as illustrations of all exhibits. 168 pages
1923: Faces of an Age brings an eventful year to life with the help of around 60 works from the holdings of the Hamburger Kunsthalle. The catastrophe of the First World War was followed by political crises, financial instability and social challenges for the still young Weimar Republic. At the same time, cultural life flourished: sport, cinema, theatre, visual arts, music and literature flourished, and the metropolitan nightlife of the "Golden Twenties" is still legendary today. Late Impressionism, Expressionism, Constructivism, New Objectivity, Surrealism and the art of the Bauhaus existed simultaneously and offered an undreamt-of diversity of artistic expression, potential and ideals.
