Horst Janssen Graphics Prize of the Claus Hüppe Foundation

With the exhibition der saum lös sich, the Hamburger Kunsthalle is showing works on paper, texts and large-format paintings by the artist Fedele Maura Friede (*1997 in Holzminden), who was recently (2024) awarded the renowned Horst Janssen Graphics Prize of the Claus Hüppe Foundation at the Kunsthalle. Friede is the eighth winner of the €20,000 prize, the most valuable award for artists in the field of drawing and printmaking, which is linked to an exhibition and a publication. The aim is to promote young artists and new positions in the field of graphic art in dialogue with universities and academies based in Germany.

Fedele Maura Friede deals with space and landscape and moves between microcosm and large panorama. Her works suggest a hidden narrative without being literal or following a story. She uses various forms of expression that combine drawing in a broader sense with writing and allow them to enter into a dialogue with each other. The quality lies in the inherent disorientation of her pictures: Her drawings are constructed and legible from all angles of the paper ground. Through the mapping and additional folds of the paper, Friede's works elude a rigid structure and constantly shift perspective. The lines create a social space that unfolds different types of perception.

Fedele Maura Friede lives and works in Leipzig, where she also completed her studies (2016-2024) at the Academy of Visual Arts with honours. Since 2020 she has been studying at the Institute of Cultural Studies at Leipzig University.
