Description:
Paula Modersohn-Becker and Edvard Munch
The great questions of life

Their expressive paintings address existential themes of life – from birth to death, humanity and nature, gender and love: Paula Modersohn-Becker and Edvard Munch, two exceptional figures in European art, reflect central questions of the period around 1900 in their internationally acclaimed works. Both were as sensitive as they were progressive barometers of their generation. In the dialogue of their painting, two worlds meet: different temperaments, woman and man. The Albertinum, in cooperation with the Munch Museum in Oslo, presents the first major joint exhibition of the works of both artists – which remain highly relevant to this day – to mark the 150th anniversary of Paula Modersohn-Becker’s birth (born 8 February 1876 in Dresden-Friedrichstadt), featuring numerous major works.
