The classical modern painting gallery of the Hamburger Kunsthalle counts with more than 700 works to the most important collections of her kind in Germany. In 1969 the last inventory catalogue was published for the classical modern age, so that after 40 years a new  scientific treatment seemed necessary. Not only because in this period numerous results of research could be achieved, but also, because the Hamburger Kunsthalle could develop systematically its collection area by important new acquisitions of more than 250 paintings.  Now the results of this new treatment are presented as the fourth volume of the row  "The collections of the Hamburger Kunsthalle", starting in 2001.
