WALTER GRAMATTÉ AND HAMBURG | 27. Nov. 2020 - 25. July 2021 | exhibition catalogue | 140 pages | softcover | german edition
The Berlin painter, draughtsman and graphic artist Walter Gramatté (1897-1929), who was a friend of artists such as Erich Heckel and Karl Schmidt-Rottluff and whose work in the 1920s moved independently between Symbolism, Expressionism and Surrealism, frequently spent time in Hamburg. Here, together with his wife Sonia Gramatté and the composer Sophie-Carmen Fridman-Gramatté, he established contacts with the art scene, including the art historian Rosa Schapire and the collector Paul Rauert. The Kunsthalle acquired prints as early as 1920 directly from the artist and later from his widow, and held an exhibition for him in 1933. In 2019, the Hamburger Kunsthalle received 47 graphic works and one painting by Gramatté as a donation from the Eckhardt-Gramatté Foundation in Winnipeg, Canada, so that more than 100 works by the artist are now in Hamburg. A selection from this rich collection is presented.
