The story behind the historic staircase
Thursday, 16 April, 7–8 pm, Hamburger Kunsthalle
With Andrea Völker

The Hamburger Kunsthalle is not a museum founded by the royal family, but was established by citizens of the city. As soon as we enter the building, we are greeted by the monumental staircase, which, with its pictorial programme by Valentin Ruths and Arthur Fitger, symbolises the civic museum.
However, the Kunsthalle’s staircase has had an eventful history, having been repurposed as a venue for contemporary art and completely painted grey for this purpose. In the 1990s, the space was finally extensively restored and today largely shines once more in the condition it was in during the 1880s.
With Andrea Völker, we follow in the footsteps of the staircase’s history and hear one or two fascinating anecdotes.
