LOOKING FOR TRACES. Drawings and Watercolours from Three Centuries | Sep 02nd 2016 - Jan 08th 2017 | special exhibition
catalogue for special exhibition | 312 pages | 286 illustrations | hardcover | Hirmer | german edition

The catalogue presents about 130 drawings by German and European artists from a private collection that has never been shown before. Renowned international authors present the development of German draftsmanship from the end of the 16th century till the end of the 19th century on the basis of the works presented.
The focus of the volume is on the art of drawing during the Goethe period and the Romantic period, including important frameworks by Johann Heinrich Wilhelm Tischbein and Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld. The catalogue also provides insights into the art of drawing of the late German Renaissance around 1600 - for example, with works by Hans Rottenhammer, Peter Candid, and Friedrich Sustris - and traces the most important lines of development of German art of drawing through the North and primarily South German Baroque of the 17th and 18th centuries to the second half of the 19th century. Finally, a glance beyond the borders of Germany into the drawing schools of Italy, France and the Netherlands follows.
