Hamburg, November 1789: Bell founder Kopper from Steintorwall wants to fulfil his mother’s greatest wish on Christmas Eve: the performance of that Christmas cantata she heard many years ago in Leipzig with her secret lover. She remembers the festive timpani and trumpets and the opening lines of the chorus: ‘Rejoice, be glad!’, and the truly heavenly music. The old handwritten score of the oratorio is said to be in the archives of the late music director Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, but it has disappeared. With the help of the bright kitchen maid Frieda, who would rather sing than scrub pots, the former travelling actress Rosina Vinstedt sets out on a quest – and in the process also encounters her own past … In her new novel, Petra Oelker tells a Christmas story set in old Hamburg. Come and experience the book launch at the reading in the Hamburger Kunsthalle!
