The media collection of the Hamburger Kunsthalle encloses videos, films, videoinstallations, records, audio cassettes and CDs of visual artists. Records and videos are collected already since 1977. Since 1993 Frank Barth developed the media collection as a component of the contemporary art gallery systematically, particularly in the area of the videos and the videoinstallations. The intention was to visualise the history of the videoart exemplarily, but also to complement the collection main focuses and, finally, to include new experimental forms, also those from Hamburg studios,
