Description:
The house at Gänsemarkt
When Hamburg was French

Hamburg, 1812: The Brestetten merchant family lived in a large house directly on Gänsemarkt. Sophia Benedikt, a cousin who lives with the Brestettens, misses her parents and especially her brother Christopher, a botanist who has gone missing in China. Times are also difficult in this country. Emperor Napoleon overruns almost the whole of Europe with his armies. As the most important city in the now French Northern Departements, Hamburg is a place of lavish celebrations as well as great misery, a meeting point for soldiers, informers and agents. Landlord Arnold Brestetten initially believes he can come to terms with the new circumstances. Until a French officer and his entourage are billeted in his house and business comes to a standstill due to the Continental Blockade. Smuggling becomes the only way out for many. Times in which it becomes increasingly difficult to distinguish between saviours and traitors, good and evil. As resistance to the occupiers begins to stir in Hamburg, the residents of the house on Gänsemarkt have to decide where their loyalties lie. With far-reaching consequences for Sophia too ...

In her great new novel, Petra Oelker tells of the fate of a Hanseatic merchant family during the French occupation.
